Thursday Thirteen ~ a list of 13 of my favourite films ~ lights, camera, action!
1. Steel Magnolias ~ because there are very few films that can make me cry and laugh at the same time in the same way as this can.
2. The Shawshank Redemption ~ such a beautiful film, ok it's dirty and grubby and brutal and sad but that moment at the end of the movie on the beach! Such hope and joy.
3. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves ~ because it's great. An American Robin Hood and I'm still hooked and then right at the end a Scottish King Richard ~ brilliant great big rollicking laugh!
4. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers ~ well, what can I say .... sing along with me :o)
5. Hotel Rwanda ~ harrowing but a story that had to be told.
6. Calamity Jane ~ "Whip crack away!"
7. Cry Freedom ~ I cry everytime I watch this film. The story of Steve Biko and Donald Woods and their fight against apartheid.
8. The Commitments ~ great music, great craic!
9. Dirty Dancing ~ because everyone of my generation loved it! Didn't they?
10. Blue Hawaii ~ because I don't think that anybody who wasn't around then has any idea how gorgeous, hard working and bloody talented Elvis actually was. How many films? 31 between 1956 and 1969 and he recorded music as well. Recording artists these days don't work that hard
11. Goldfinger ~ because Sean Connery just was the best James Bond ever ... no arguments!
12. Shrek ~ the soundtrack, the green ogre, the sight gags, the talking donkey ~ fab for kids but even better for adults.
13. A few good men ~ not for the Cruise BUT instead because when Jack Nicholson does bad he does it better than anyone else!!

I've only seen six of your thirteen movies. Clearly my movie viewing is deficient.
I did love Dirty Dancing, though.
Happy TT!
I have never seen Steel Magnolias but have always wanted to.
The Shawshank Redemption was an awesome film. I learned so much from it. The part that particularly stirred me in this movie was when they wrote that they were here on the archway.
I don't really remember Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. I do love Disney's Robin Hood. :-)
I have watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers several times...I wish that I could dance like that.
I have never seen Hotel Rwanda.
I have probably seen Calamity Jane.
I have never seen Cry Freedom.
I loved The Commitments. I have read the book & I have one of their CDs. I think that I can speak in a pretty good Irish accent.
Dirty Dancing...I have watched many, many times.
Blue Hawaii....most Elvis is awesome.
I have never seen Goldfinger.
I loved Shrek & have the soundtrack. "I'm a Believer" on there is just great.
I have seen A Few Good Men & watch it every time it comes on but never really remember it that well.
What other movies have you seen on this list Lisa?
Shawshank blew me away the first time I saw it. I also loved The Green Mile (again based on a novel by Stephen King) - very similar.
And after Dirty Dancing my friends and I danced down Queen St (Auckland's main street) like complete idiots!
Steel Magnolias, yep, a big weepy alright.
Oh, thanks for the clip from 7 Brides for 7 Brothers! I am a big Howard Keel fan. What a voice! What sex appeal! I was very sad to hear that he had died last year.
I saw the movies Calamity Jane and Steel Mags. Gold Finger is one of my fav 007 flicks; and Dirty Dancing- oh yeah!! Great list!
Thanks for reminding me of Calamity Jane! I know how unhip it is, but I don't care: Doris Day movies are a secret passion of mine. And this one isn't on TV that often so I haven't thought about it in ages. Perhaps it's time to rent it.
I love Steel Magnolias and there is no 007 other than Sean Connery!!!
happy TT!
The first two are on my list of favorites movies. I just watched Steel Magnolias the other night.
Connery is the only Bond!
Cool list...
#3 was first out when I was in junior high...I watched that with my best friend and we loved it sooo much!
A Few Good Men was an excellent movie, your right, it's not all about Cruise.
Shawshank another great movie.I'd love to retire to a Mexican beach one day.
Who hasn't seen Dirty Dancing and a Sean Connery ,james bond movie!
All great movies.
Happy Thursday! I did a movie T13 too on my favorite LOVE movies.
My T13 is up!
Great list of movies. I've seen and loved 10 of the 13. I'll have to get the other 3. I think I've seen Steel Magnolias 25 times and it still makes me cry every time.
Great list! Love 10,11 & 12, but they are all great films. Happy Thursday and thanks for visiting!
Have to agree with you on Shawshank Redemption, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, & Dirty Dancing. Most of the others I have not seen.
Great list. Happy Thirteen to ya.
Mine is up, and I think its my 3rd time doing it.
Hey i am trying to think of something meaningful to say, as per TT instructions for this week!
I love all the films on this list apart from the ones i haven't seen of course, which are Hotel Rwanda, Blue Hawaii and Cry Freedom. I think i will add them to my imaginary must see list.
Great list!
Claire
I love Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, for the soundtrack alone. My other favorites? Just about anything with Orlando Bloom in it.
Great list of movies. I love Steel Magnolia's. It's coming on stage in the theaters over here this year.
My Tt is about types of support.
no 1 is my number 1 I love it. Made the family watch it recently they didn't get it, I was roaring and so embarrassed sat infront fo them doing this that I have promised myself that I will watch it alone next time.
DD yep like that one too
Wow - we have very similar tastes, honey!! :-)
Steel Magnolias is one of my top faves too - but for a film to make you laugh and cry simultaneously I have to recommend 50 First Dates.
cq
I've seen all those movies except two, Hotel Rowanda and The Commitments.
Hotel Rowanda is on my list of wanna see. I've never heard of the other one. Gotta google it. :o)
Great list!
I've not seen Steel Magnolias. I completely agree about The Commitments. I'd probably add Pulp Fiction to my list.
2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12 - AMEN Sister!
(Especially 5)
:-)
Pretty Woman...please add to the list.
And anything with Tom Cruise, even if you liked it way back when, please remove...because the man should stick to acting and not try to be a physician or psychiatrist!
A friend called #3 "Robin Hood: the Avast-Ye-Varmints version".
Shawshank Redemption is one of my favourite movies, although as you say brutal, sad, etc such a very clever twist.
Loved Steel Magnolias, and yeah, I cried (don't tell anyone that though). Robin Hood, I loved seeing Costner in all that getup, phwoar lol
Dirty Dancing is a classic. "Noone puts baby in a corner"
and A Few Good Men? I'm with you, Nicholson is the best at BAD!
Dirty Dancing is such a classic! The soundtrack was awesome
I have to see Hotel Rwanda!! We have Super Écran(the french channel who is like HBO or The movie Channel) and it did past often, but couldn't get a chance to watch it!!
And I didn't like Sean Connery that much when he was playing James Bond!!Sorry!!
I'll be posting some of my favourite films online for this week's TT (I'm new to the group, this will be #2 for me.) I loved the fact that you mixed genres. I also loved the range of movies you identified. I too adore Dirty Dancing: No one puts Baby in the corner. Blue Hawaii: I used the pretend I was one of Elvis love interests . . . oh, I had entire scenarios playing out in my head. Thanks for the memories!
