Why me?

In school yesterday …

“Mrs L, why is wee-wee yellow and poo brown?”

See, these are the questions in school I hate! What do you say to that? This is a 4 year old who asked the question … very bright but nevertheless only 4! So no way am I being drawn into a full discussion of the body’s food system, intestines, bowels and kidneys. In fact I don’t even think I know why wee-wee is yellow and poo is brown.

Me ~ Umm! It’s tidy up time. Off you go!

Yeh, I know, I’m a chicken!

Ok, I have to go and Google this and find out why! I want to know too!

Really.

I did half of the homework :)

The kidneys serve two major functions: they keep the salt content of the blood constant, and they filter waste out of the bloodstream. So, the main components of urine are (salt) water and waste products. The major waste product from cells in the body is ammonia, and the major waste product from blood is a broken form of heme called bilirubin. In the liver, each of these is converted into a less hazardous form: ammonia is converted to urea, and bilirubin is degraded to urobilins. Salt, water, and urea are all colorless, but urobilins (which come from degraded pigments) are yellow. So, if you drink a lot, your urine will be more dilute and clearer, and if you get dehydrated, your urine will contain less water and be darker yellow.

Thanks Mar, I am just eating my breakfast ;)

Yes I would have chickened at that one too.

I have an emergency chocolate supply in my cupboard for moments just like these.... not for the children mind you....Teachers or TAs only

Let's hope the kid forgets about this before the next Show and Tell!

So you didn't go with the "milk, milk, lemonade, round the corner chocolate's made" school of thought then?

Could be tougher though. My daughter asked when we can visit Grandma (in heaven) the other day. Figure out that one with a 3 year old!

I got the answer to the pooh one in my book "Why do men have nipples". As Mar has said in detail, bilirubin is basically the reason pooh is brown.

Perhaps we could find out why pee is practically fluorescent yellow when you're taking vitamins? lol I'd be interested in that.

Are the vitamins coloured orange?
My granny drank that much ORange Squash (diluted stuff) when she was really frail that her skin went orange.

Just thought I would throw that one into the colourful conversation
all we need now is to ask;
why do
Red why are spots red
Orangecovered in this comment
YellowWee-Wee covered that one (not literally!)
Greenwhy if you throw up sick for a long enough time it will turn green
Blueif blood is read why are veins blue?
IndigoWhy do bruises go Indigo?
VioletWhy do bruises go Indigo?
and then we have a full rainbow of disgusting questions

Vitamin B is what changes your wee to blinding bright yellow. I don't know why but I know it happens when I take those Berocca pick me up things.
